Ireland v Australia Odds & Match Preview

Kick-off: 3pm, Saturday 30th November 2024. Aviva Stadium, Dublin

Ireland will be going all-out to finish their November series on a high when they lock horns with Australia in an autumn Test which is being staged to celebrate the Irish Rugby Football Union’s 15th anniversary.

Andy Farrell’s men will still be on a high following a convincing win over Fiji last weekend and he will be naming his side for this clash on Thursday afternoon at 2pm, Australia also set to name their line-up then.

Cut loose

Ireland’s 19-match winning run at the Aviva Stadium came to an end when they lost to the All Blacks earlier this month but they have successfully bounced back from this disappointment with subsequent victories over Argentina and Fiji. The meeting with Argentina was a somewhat nervy encounter with the Boys in Green winning 22-19 after the Pumas had knocked on deep into opposition territory, however a much changed Ireland side cut loose in their next meeting with Fiji, running in eight tries and triumphing convincingly to the tune of 52-17.

Longest winning run

Australia got their autumn tour underway in excellent fashion with back-to-back wins over England and Wales, however any hopes of a Grand Slam were well and truly dashed when they were beaten 27-13 by Scotland at Murrayfield last time out. Indeed, the Wallabies have lost to Ireland in each of the last three meetings between the sides – including a series win in Australia four years ago – and victory for the hosts this weekend would equal their longest winning run against Australia.

Subplot

Clearly the big subplot in this eagerly-awaited Test is the return of Joe Schmidt to the Aviva Stadium. Schmidt is regarded as one of Ireland’s best ever coaches, winning the Six Nations Championship three times in six years with a Grand Slam along the way, as well as delivering the first win over the All Blacks in 111 years and the first ever win in South Africa. He left after the 2019 Rugby World Cup and was such succeeded by current coach Andy Farrell, who was assistant at the time. This will be the first meeting between Schmidt and Farrell as opposition head coaches.

Favourites

Following their convincing win over Fiji last time out, Ireland are regarded as most likely winners here and this is clearly reflected in the betting markets, some bookmakers going as low as 1/12 that the Boys in Green prevail here (best odds 1/8), while Australia are a best price of 8/1 to bounce back from their disappointing defeat at Murrayfield last time out.
